There are many options for smart network engineers. They can start their own consultancy, they can freelance, they can do lot of things… Many professionals decide for this path.
However, one has to learn a lot in the beginnings to become a good engineer. It’s not like everyone who just finished CCNA can start his own business… So, interviewers try to find out if you are loyal, if you plan to stay with them for a long time, or if you just want to learn something and leave as soon as you feel ready to start your own business.
You have to convince them about your honest interest to learn and grow in their company. Of course, this does not have to be truth. You can leave them and start your own business in two years time. Nobody will hate you for doing it. However, it is good to show clear intentions to stay with them for a long time, once you are interviewed. You can mention job security, or simply say that you do not have the right personality to be a businessman. With such problems on your mind, employer will easily believe that you are planning to stay in his company for a long time. And that is what you want to achieve.
I never wanted to run my own business. There is a lot of risk involved and I don’t want to take it. I have a family and do not want to position myself under any sort of risk. I want to be employed for a rest of my working life. This is the way I like it.
I know that many engineers prefer freelancing. However, I prefer different career path. I am not good in sales and in communication. In business, everything is about finding new clients. That is not my strength… I am a technician, can do this job very well and love doing it. For someone like me, freelancing is not an option.
